Ethiopian Graduation Dress

Architecture for Humanity Competition

Architecture for Humanity is a non-profit organization that partners with thousands of architects, designers, and construction professionals throughout the globe to design sustainable projects for many of the world’s 3rd world regions and disaster sites. While the most of the built designs may not be the jaw dropping spectacle of Calatrava (one of my personal favorites), the buildings and ecosystem/landscapes revamps are amazing feats in sustainable design especially given the location of the projects.

Also, these projects stimulate the economies in these developing areas!

You can get involved too. There are many US Chapters to join!

Alexander McQueen 2009 Fall Fashion Show- Paris

Alexander McQueen scares and fascinates me. Just take a look at his “Cruela DeVil meets….I’m not sure exactly what”2009 fall fashion show. He has a ready to wear line, which is a bit more normal. Some of his suits and dresses are worn by Victoria Beckham, Madonna, and countless other celebs. And- his McQ line for younger people is beautiful, but still out of my price point.

What I’m trying to say is Alexander McQueen, in all his edgy/freaky fashion, is one of my favorite designers. He takes bizarre risks, knows how to flatter women’s figures, and, most importantly, never bores his audience! I would even wear some of the clothes from the Cruela-ish fashion show…minus the big plastic lips.

My favorite piece of the moment? The current main page of his website. Is that too much for a job interview? Nah.

How to Survive a Recession in the Design Industry

Whether you never landed a design job after graduating, you got laid off, or your current design job has cut hours, benefits and people by the day, there are a few options out there to help you survive the recession.

1. Find freelance design opportunities through friends, family and craigslist.
Upside: You make your own hours and can possibly add work to your portfolio.
Downside: No benefits and no stability

2. Take any side jobs you can find
Upside: There are stress free jobs like working at the library, an art store, or a book store where you can make a little cash.
Downside: Little intellectuality. Little pay. No benefits. Little design opportunity.

3. Apply to grad school and run from the job market completely (my favorite idea)
Upside: You are continuing your education and possibly research. Specifically in my field of Architecture, I have to get my Masters sometime. When the recession is over (fingers crossed) you will be worth more to a company!
Downside: Cost

4. Keep applying and networking at your dream jobs….something might become available
Upside: It might work
Downside: It might not.
